Tour Details

When traveling the Andean Baroque route, one can go back in time and discover how art was utilized to evangelize indigenous people during the colonial era by stopping at the serene villages of Huaro, Carnicunca, and Andahuaylillas. The stunningly painted murals that adorn the local churches show religious settings where figures of the saints interact with opulent Mamachas, and their magnificently carved wooden altarpieces are coated in gold leaf.

Itinerary

Half DayAndean Baroque Tour & Tipon

The Andean Baroque Route passes through four temples, one in Cusco and three in the South Valley, a region connecting Lake Titicaca, the Madre de Dios jungle, and the capital of the Inca Empire. Prior to the Incas, this served as a commercial axis for the transportation of gold, silver, coca leaves, and animal fibers. Since then, it has passed by old fabric factories like the one in Lucre as well as archaeological sites like Tipon and Rumicolca.

The Vilcanota River, which originates in the Nevado Ausangate mountain and flows across two lagoons, including Huacarpay, a Ramsar Site with an abundance of birds, cattails, and sunsets, runs parallel to the South Valley. Small farming, trading, and ranching communities as well as settlements of witch doctors, bakers, and bricklayers, as well as musicians and dancers who honor the Virgin of Carmen and the Señor del Qoyllor Riti, make up the valley.
